This is an Airfix 1/72 Scale assembly and painting required plastic model kit of the Douglas SBD Dauntless, a carrier based dive-bomber of the United States Navy in World War II. Model kit features: Vintage kit has raised panel lines and rivets, basic cockpit and gunner's station, 2 seated aircrew, raised relief radial engine face, pivoting arresting hook, single-piece 3-blade propeller, underwing bombs (x2), centerline bomb with cradle, choice of 2 cowlings (-3 or -5 types), single or dual-mount rear machine guns and optional configuration canopy. Decals and color painting guide for 2 aircraft: US Navy SBD-3 'B-11' of VB-6 onboard USS Enterprise, Midway, June 1942 and Free French A-24B No 254541 of Groupe de Chasse-Bombardement 1/18 'Vendee' in the South of France, 1944 - includes instrument panel markings, rudder stripes, wing walkways and stencil data. The SBD Dauntless was the primary dive-bomber of the U.S. Navy until it was supplanted in part by the more advanced SB2C Helldiver. The most notable action involving the SBD Dauntless was in the Battle of the Coral Sea in early May 1942 when SBDs along with torpedo-bombers off the Carriers U.S.S. Enterprise and U.S.S Yorktown sank the Japanese aircraft carrier Shoho. Some 5,900 SBDs were produced in the Second World War, and SBDs remained in active service until the end of World War II.
